Chasing Mirrors is a season that focuses on contemporarty visual art and culture inspired by connections with the greater Middle East. Our very own Athier Mousawi has collaborated with young people from three community partners to create an installation of new work, reflecting on portraiture and concepts of representation and identity.
Athier has a very distinct style which combines geometric Islamic shapes, abstracted Arabic calligraphy and bold colours. 'Chasing Mirrors : My Portrait, Shape by Shape' (which runs until Sunday 8 January 2012) showcases work by young people who have participated in art workshops led by Athier as well as his own large-scale piece created this summer.
The exhibition was launched last Friday at the National Portrait Gallery, co-hosted by the Director of the National Portrait Gallery and Athier himself! Head down to the National Portrait Gallery tonight for the Late Shift to hear Athier discussing the project.
